Sustainability

Objective: “Guarantee the future production of wine and its legitimacy in society through an integral sustainability strategy”

sostenibilidad - salud y bienestar

HEALTH & WELLNESS

At Manzanos Enterprises we promote the values of the Wine in Moderation movement in each of its 3 pillars:

  • Training for our employees, visitors and consumers.
  • Promotion of moderate consumption.
  • Responsible communication.
sostenibilidad - energia asequible

AFFORDABLE AND NON-POLLUTING ENERGY

Manzanos Enterprises has implemented energy saving systems in production activity in recent years. In addition, we have installed 400 solar panels for the consumption of self-generated energy. At present, and thanks to the gravity design of the winery and its construction inside a hill, it allows us to preserve the optimal temperature and humidity of the production processes naturally without the need for energy expenditure. And we avoid the expense of mechanical pumping of the wine.

sostenibilidad - reduccion desigualdades

REDUCTION OF INEQUALITIES

At Manzanos Enterprises, we are highly committed to social inclusion and the fight against inequalities. In our Siglo brand project, we work hand in hand with an NGO to provide employment for people with intellectual disabilities (ASPRODEMA). Likewise, our facilities are fully equipped for the accessibility of any person with physical disabilities or motor difficulties. In addition, we are an LGTBIQ+ f and pet friendly company.

Within the Manzanos Enterprises team there has always been parity of rights and fair treatment to avoid social, economic, and political inequalities.

sostenibilidad - vida ecosistemas terrestres

LIFE OF TERRESTRIAL ECOSYSTEMS

We are developing new areas of study to better understand the microbiota of the soil and its interaction with the plant, as well as studies on the recovery of varieties or functional biodiversity that make it possible to value the genetic resources of the vine. We are planting more and more organic vineyards that help us in this purpose, since pesticides or fertilizers are not used, helping to preserve the ecosystem.

sostenibilidad - igualdad

GENDER EQUALITY

At Manzanos Enterprises we support equality in the workplace, being a parity organization that also works to increase the number of women present in our management bodies, committees and working groups.

  • Half of our technical and winemaking department are women.
  • Ownership: one third are women.
  • Management: the finance, administration, quality and production departments are managed by women.
sostenibilidad - crecimiento economico

DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

Our main activity is agricultural in nature: viticulture. Located in a town with a small population, ours is an activity that contributes to the permanence of the population in rural areas. For some small municipalities, this activity is key to their survival and economic development, offering job opportunities among the young population. At Manzanos Enterprises, more than 75% of the workers reside in municipalities adjacent to the winery, thus helping to prevent the depopulation of rural areas.

sostenibilidad - patrimonio cultural

PROTECTION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE

We also have the objective of promoting Spanish culture by showing the public the two wineries with the most history in Spain: Bodegas Manzanos Haro, the oldest winery in Rioja that we have restored for the production of premium wines and the reception of wine tourists, as well as Bodegas Manzanos Campanas, the oldest winery in Navarre and pilgrims’ hostel in the XIII century of the way of St James the Apostle to Santiago.

sostenibilidad - alianzas

ALLIANCES TO ACHIEVE OBJECTIVES

Manzanos Enterprises works and collaborates closely with Ecovidrio, an entity dedicated to managing the selective collection of glass container waste in Spain and which collaborates with the Ministry of Agriculture to promote sustainability policies in the sector.

We are also a collaborating entity of the Secretary of State for Trade and ICEX with regard to the defense of universal multilateral trade based on rules, the elimination of trade barriers and support for trade agreements.

sostenibilidad - agua limpia

HEALTHY WATER AND SANITATION

Manzanos Enterprises has spent years developing strategies for efficient water management and to reduce pollution and discharges with specific actions such as the implementation of a plan to reduce consumption and improve discharges.

sostenibilidad - innovacion

INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE

At Manzanos Enterprises, in addition to developing an innovation strategy in which technology helps us to improve and be much more competitive in the wine sector, we understand technology as a fundamental and essential part, which is why we invest in state-of-the-art machinery such as electrodialysis stabilizers, bottling machines with a flow of 12,000 Bots/hour and an intelligent logistics center that increases efficiency. In addition, years ago we launched a wine digitization process that helps us to unify, store and transmit information in real time.

sostenibilidad - clima

CLIMATE ACTION

At Manzanos Enterprises we contribute to climate action by reducing emissions according to the Spanish Wineries for Emission Reduction. Likewise, we have developed a vineyard action plan against climate change:

  • Drip irrigation: control of water consumption.
  • Soil management, plant covers or minimal tillage avoiding erosion.
  • Planting density optimizes the external leaf surface.
  • Optimization of the conduction system, attenuates the effect of temperature and radiation on leaves and clusters (reduces water and thermal stress).
Siglo Asprodema Bodegas Manzanos

Siglo, the wine of Saco and Asprodema (NGO)

Today Siglo continues this tradition, the result of the heritage of wine-growing families, in collaboration with Asprodema, an NGO that promotes people with intellectual disabilities, which covers the bottles with the Saco by hand.
The sack is the most characteristic of Siglo and is, perhaps, one of the reasons why our brand has become an indisputable reference in Rioja, since we can all easily remember “the wine in the sack”.
The bag was born from a need: to better preserve wine. And with that maxim we continue making the bag.
Although our wine is made in Rioja, it is transported to dozens of countries around the world and we all want to ensure that the wine arrives as it was conceived, without any alteration due to changes in temperature during transit and storage.
The bag protects the wine from changes in temperature and light, to emulate the conditions of its aging in the winery, where we maintain a constant temperature of 12 degrees during all seasons of the year and also a dim, indirect light so that the wine sleep with the darkness necessary for your correct evolution.
The process of making the bag is long and tedious since we import the jute from its origin, in India, and it is transported in boats for days until we receive it.
Once here we check the quality of the jute and select the parts that we send to the NGO Asprodema.
They cut and sew by hand the fabric that will wrap the bottle and leave a space so we can put the bottle.
It is now when the wine returns to the winery to be labeled on the jute and we can send it to its destination.
Choosing Asprodema to carry out this careful manual production process responds to our social commitment to people.
We are a company committed to society, to people, and that is why we always contribute our grain of sand to different causes.
An example of this is working with Asprodema, which for us is an example of perseverance and improvement. It is about choosing to do good for social empowerment and we are clear that it is a work that moves us.

Fundacion Aspasim Bodegas Manzanos

Labels Finca Manzanos and the Aspasim Foundation

Bodegas Manzanos launches ‘Finca Manzanos’ with these personalized labels in order to raise funds for the Aspasim foundation.
The initiative is part of the strategy carried out by Aspasim focused on “raising income by associating with quality products.” The wines chosen were Finca Manzanos Crianza and Finca Manzanos Blanco fermented in barrels, both from Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin. The latter has been internationally recognized by receiving the bronze medal at the Decanter awards.
Aspasim, with 75 years of history, is a non-profit entity based in Barcelona whose mission is the integration, inclusion, assistance, rehabilitation and comprehensive, personalized and quality care of people with severe mental disabilities in all areas of life. (early care, education, employment, leisure, sports, housing, etc.).
At Bodegas Manzanos we are committed to contributing to improving people’s lives.

Sustainable Practices

It seems that with the arrival of spring, the importance of our land becomes more notable. On these dates, the fields are filled with color and vitality, as if they were a lure for those who go on a trip or decide to get lost in nature for a while. And it is then, when we realize how important it can be to take care of our environment.
At Bodegas Manzanos, we are very aware of the importance that our actions have on the environment and, consequently, on our raw materials. So much so, that we even want to make it visible on our shield with the slogan “In this abundant land we live.” That is why we wanted to dedicate our blog entry to telling you what practices we carry out to take care of this precious asset.
From our beginnings until today, Bodegas Manzanos has wanted to persevere sustainability as a fundamental principle. This is confirmed by the “Best Of The Wine Tourism” recognition in the Sustainable Practices category awarded by the Network of Large Capitals of Wine in 2007 and which serves as recognition of quality and excellence in wine tourism.
From our vineyards we start with the idea of nature conservation, that is why we are committed to integrated viticulture. We achieve a reduction in the use of products, working the vineyards with a vegetal cover that also favors the floral development and auxiliary fauna in our lands.
In waste disposal we are also meticulous, maintaining a balance with sustainability. Without going any further, the stem that is extracted from the bunches and which, apparently, is useless, is destined for cattle grazing. The same happens with the waste water generated in the winery. In our case, once this has been filtered in our treatment plant, it is used to water the vines closest to the winery.
One of the most confusing things, when it comes to sustainability, is the purpose given to the packaging once it has been used. Therefore, to continue with a line of respect for the environment, we have signed a contract with an external waste collection and management company for the removal of the glass that we generate after bottling. Likewise, we have agreements with glass companies that, from time to time, come to our warehouse to remove the pallets and plastic separators in which the bottles that we have previously purchased from them come. And this is why we also have a press that helps us reduce the volume of cardboard and plastic generated in bottling. With this, we intend to facilitate transportation for subsequent recycling to the intermediaries who carry it out.
Our workers are also aware of the exercise of these healthy practices. It should be noted that the groups of workers who come to work in the fields always fill the available places on trips to the vineyards. To this, we must add that the fact that the winery and our vineyards are close to each other considerably reduces the use of transportation. Furthermore, we have to emphasize that our tractors are small in size, adapted to vineyard cultivation, so the fuel consumption and pollution they generate are lower than that of other vehicles.

Placas solares Bodegas Manzanos

Investment in sustainability with 400 solar panels

Despite being an eminently sustainable sector, there are many winegrowers and wineries that have stepped up to the plate in terms of sustainability with different social, economic and environmental initiatives. Bodegas Manzanos remains committed to its sustainable strategy and adds another initiative: having installed 400 solar panels to guarantee covering a large percentage of its consumption.
Bodegas Manzanos meets another milestone in its sustainable career, although its design and architecture were already worthy of the “Best of” award in sustainable practices, awarded by the Great Wine Capitals Global Network in 2008. And the winery is built taking advantage of the unevenness of the land on a hill, so part of the winery is underground and this allows the ideal conditions for wine aging to be maintained without energy, both the constant temperature of 11 degrees Celsius and the darkness and humidity. Additionally, it uses gravity for crafting. It is a design created by the winemaker and fourth generation of the family, Víctor Fernández de Manzanos, who sought not only to be efficient and profitable but also sustainable.

Collaboration with the Tierra Rapaz Foundation

Bodegas Manzanos announces a pioneering collaboration with the Tierra Rapaz Foundation in the Barn Owl (Tyto alba) Repopulation Project in the vineyards of Azagra (Navarra).

In a joint effort to promote sustainable agriculture and balance local ecosystems, Bodegas Manzanos and the Tierra Rapaz Foundation in collaboration with the University of Navarra have launched the Barn Owl (Tyto alba) Repopulation Project in the vineyards of Azagra (Navarra). The main objective of this project is the reintroduction of the Barn Owl as a biocontroller of agricultural pests, thus reducing the dependence on pesticides and promoting biodiversity.

Project Motivation: In the last decades, the way of farming has changed drastically due to globalization, technological advancement and population growth. Crops are now more extensive and require modern, industrialized machinery. This change has led to the disappearance of small tool houses, essential for barn owl farming, and their replacement by enclosed hangars for storing large machines.
In addition, agricultural pest control has been based on large-scale spraying with pesticides, affecting both wildlife and human health. Historically, populations of micromammals, such as the Mediterranean vole (Microtus duodecimcostatus) and the vole (Microtus arvalis), were naturally controlled by predators such as the barn owl and the common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus). However, human action has caused a significant decline in the populations of these predators due to the destruction of their habitats and the use of poisons.

This decline has generated ecological imbalances, such as the increase in vole populations in the Ribera de Navarra, causing significant damage to crops and economic losses. The decrease in natural predators has exacerbated these problems, highlighting the need for sustainable pest control methods.

Project Goal: The objective is to repopulate the barn owl in the vineyards of Azagra, Navarra, to act as a biocontroller of micromammals that may become agricultural pests, thus reducing the use of pesticides. It is hoped to extend the repopulation to other areas of Navarra and La Rioja Baja in the coming years. This approach, promoted by entities such as INTIA and GANASA of the Government of Navarra, has been successful in controlling voles by installing nest boxes for natural predators.

Project Summary: The project will focus on the release of barn owls bred in captivity using the “hacking” method. This method has proven to be effective in other places in the Peninsula, although its impact on the adaptation of birds reared “ex situ” has not been scientifically studied. The project seeks to establish a rearing protocol that maximizes the survival of the released owls in their new environment.

This project represents a significant effort towards a more sustainable agriculture and reaffirms the commitment of Bodegas Manzanos and the Tierra Rapaz Foundation to the protection of the environment and the preservation of native species. We are excited to be part of this valuable collaboration and are confident that it will bring lasting benefits to the region and its ecosystems.

Join us on this path to sustainability and biodiversity!

May the motto #ThePeopleSavethePeople continue to be our driving force of solidarity.

At the end of 2024, the Valencian Community was severely affected by a DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels), a meteorological phenomenon that has left intense rains and floods in various regions, causing great damage and putting thousands of people in an emergency situation.

In a world that constantly challenges us, we firmly believe in the power of solidarity and in the ability of people to come together in mutual support. Our Community of Valencia has been key to strengthening this purpose, and we are inspired by the incredible response we have received in our last initiative.

The first weekend of November 2024, with the aim of doing our bit, we launched a campaign to support those who need it most. We committed to donating two trucks loaded with drinking water and opened the possibility for friends, acquaintances and supportive citizens to join the cause. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to fill a third truck and send, in total, almost 50,000 bottles of water that were delivered on Monday morning in Valencia.

These images are a thank you to all those who made this initiative possible. You have been part of this chain of solidarity and with your support we have shown, once again, that together we can achieve a positive and lasting impact. May this wave of generosity continue, because every small gesture counts and #ThePeopleSavethePeople must not be forgotten.
